Our exhibition and project “Oworonshoki, Lagos. Decolonial and Feminist Practices in Urban Design” won one of the Academy Prizes at the 2023 Rundgang of the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design!

Based on mapping the daily lives of seven women in the Oworonshoki neighborhood of Lagos, Nigeria, and reading Tsitsi Dangarembga (Black and Female, 2022), Achille Mbembe (On the Postcolony, 2001), Felwine Sarr (Afrotopia, 2019), and Lilian Thuram (The White Thinking, 2022), students from our class of urban design, the class of communication design of Uli Cluss, and the University of Lagos, Department of Architecture, worked together on a project responding to the demands for decolonial and feminist thinking and practice in urban design and planning.

With Mbembe, to colonize “is to put to work the two-faceted movement of destroying and creating, creating by destroying, creating destruction and destroying the creation, creating to create, and destroying to destroy.”

With Dangarembga, we therefore imagine a world in which, in the words of Reni Eddo-Lodge, all people are liberated from the destructive effects of divisive, ranking ideologies – a world with evened-out playing fields, pulling down categories based on every demographic.

The program for the 2023 summer semester consisted of a summer school in Lagos, funded by the DAAD, a theory and reading seminar, and an urban design studio, with the participation of students from the University of Lagos whose exchange semester in our class of urban design was financed by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation.
